Southern Magnolia Blossom

All over the South, in the Springtime, you can see and smell the blooming Southern Magnolia Tree and what a sight it is to behold!

The fragrance of the magnolia blossom is like none other and hard to describe but one whiff and you will know what I am talking about. The blossoms are beautiful from the time the bud forms until they are in full bloom. These sometimes huge blossoms give a new meaning to the term White on White. Just look at all the shades of white against all the gorgeous shades of green. The Southern Magnolia leaves are so beautiful and the blossoms smell wonderful. I love to cut the blossoms and bring them inside but they don't last long at all, unfortunately.

According to Wikipedia about Magnolia Grandiflora, the Southern Magnolia Tree is also called the Bull Bay Magnolia but the scientific name is Magnolia Grandiflora and it is natural to the Southeastern United States. Wikipedia says that the timber is heavy and hard and often used for furniture but I don't think I have ever had a piece of Magnolia Wood furniture. Hmmmmmmm. Magnolia Trees are wonderful for making memories for your children and grandchildren because they are sturdy and will live through several generations. Even though the one that I passed on my way to elementary school did not belong to us, it felt like it did. Today when I stand under that wonderful old tree, the memories just gush forth and it is such a good feeling.

Yes, this Majestic Magnolia Tree was on the route we took to school back in the 50's and I have climbed up it's branches and absorbed its breath taking beauty and inhaled its unforgettable aroma.I would estimate that this stately tree is at least 40 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

I think a swing would be wonderful hanging from one of these strong limbs. When I was young we had a tire swing on our Mimosa Tree and I did some of best thinking on that swing. There is just something comforting about being under or on these strong limbs. The sturdy limbs look like they are inviting me to come closer. I always felt like I was being embraced by mother nature or the good Lord above.

The owner of this tree today is a descendent of the person who owned it when I was a child. I have had fun sharing my memories of their tree with the family. They have a young son and I hope he is making lots of fun memories at "my" tree, too. Maybe I should spend some time with him and tell him how much this tree means to me.

We planted our Southern Magnolia Tree when our son was born so it has always been known as his tree. He grew by leaps and bounds and so did his tree. It is fun to take a picture of your child standing by the tree every year on their birthday. Our son is now 34 years old and measures 6 ft 4 inches. His Magnolia Tree is over 30 feet tall. He still calls it "my tree" and is very proud of it.

All the shades of green really give the tree depth beyond comprehension. The new growth is a bright and shining green with the older growth various stages of Olive to Hunter greens. It is an evergreen so we often cut the Magnolia Leaves at Christmastime to use with our decorations. After washing off all the dirt and dust, I shine them up a bit with Cooking Oil and they look so pretty on my mantle.

My mom decorated with Magnolia Leaves and Pine Cones. I remember one year when I was probably around 12 years old, the local Garden Club decorated our new home for a Holiday House Tour. They used shiny Magnolia Leaves on the mantle and pinecones. I feel sure it was my mom's idea for she was very active in the garden club. The pinecones were sprayed with just a touch of gold and they used a thick rope that was sprayed gold, too. The rope intertwined among the cones and leaves. It was really very beautiful and so unique.
