Kimberly's Flight

Captain Kimberly Hampton

The Story of Captain Kimberly Hampton

"Kimberly's Flight" by Anna Simon and Ann Hampton is the story of Captain Kimberly Hampton, America's first woman combat pilot killed in action by the enemy. Kimberly's helicopter, an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, was shot down on January 2, 2004 near Fallujah, Iraq.Anna Simon tells this story with Kimberly's mother, Ann Hampton. Kimberly was the only child of Ann and Dale Hampton of Easley, South Carolina. The Hamptons formed the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Foundation in memory of their daughter and the proceeds from this book will go to the foundation. "Kimberly's Flight" is published by Casemate Publishers.

My heart goes out to Kimberly's family and I think this book is a wonderful tribute to her life. They donate to Wounded Warriors through the sale of this book.I posted my review of "Kimberly's Flight" below but I want to let you know about the Book Signings as well as give you a chance to purchase .Kimberly's Flight from Amazon.com. Kimberly's Flight available on Amazon.com - Kimberly's Flight by Anna Simon and Ann Hampton

The book jacket states that Anna Simon tells about the life of Captain Kimberly Hampton through interviews, Kimberly's emails to her parents, and is entwined with Ann Hampton's narrative of loving and losing their only child. This book is a legacy to Ann's daughter. Ann and her husband, Dale, share this particular email on their Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Foundation Website:Kimberly's love for her job as a combat aviator was never more evident than in an email she wrote to her parents while deployed to Afghanistan in early 2003:

"You don't still worry about me do you? Nah! Can't imagine I give you much to worry about - I mean volunteering to go to an airborne unit and jump out of airplanes with only thin material to slow my descent to the earth, and then volunteering to go to a combat zone where there are rockets and gunfights and land mine strikes every day. Nope, not a thing in the world to worry about. And that's not to mention my chosen profession, which is to fly a single engine helicopter which is overweight, outdated and slow. No, nothing to worry about!"If there is anything I can say to ease your mind - if anything ever happens to me, you can be certain that I am doing the things I love. I'm living my dreams for sure-living life on the edge at times and pushing the envelope. But I'm doing things others only dream about from the safety and comfort of home. I wouldn't trade this life for anything - I truly love it! So worry if you must, but you can be sure that your only child is living a full, exciting life and is HAPPY!"Thank you for always supporting me. I love you.Kimberly"

Just talking with author Anna Simon about Captain Kimberly Hampton makes me wish that I had known her. She lived life to fullest doing what she wanted to do and she definitely made a difference during her short time on this earth. Her life is an inspiration. I have not read any other books about women pilots in the military but I was sure impressed with this one and learned a lot. This is one of the best inspirational books about women that I have read.

A Review of Kimberly's Flight

by OhMe aka Nancy Tate Hellams

I had the pleasure of visiting with author Anna Simon prior to reading Kimberly's Flight and after meeting her and hearing about the book, I knew I wanted to read it to learn more about her co-author Ann Hampton and Ann's daughter, Captain Kimberly Hampton of Easley, SC. Since I live in Pendleton SC, I am only about 20 miles from Easley and remember reading about Kimberly's death in 2004 at the young age of 27 but I never met her or any of her family. After reading this book, I sure felt like I knew the Hamptons and felt so appreciative of the fact that this book was written and I had this chance to get to know this extraordinary young woman who had touched so many lives during her short time on this earth. The forward is written by Lt. General William B. Caldwell, IV and the reader immediately learns of some of Kimberly's accomplishments in the military as well as introduce the reader to her parents, Ann and Dale Hampton. The first chapter covers the events of January 2, 2004 which was the day that her helicopter, an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Helicopter, was shot down over Fallujah, Iraq. Throughout the book, more information is given about the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Helicopter and it is just so hard to imagine someone Kimberly's size piloting something that big but that is exactly what she wanted to be doing.Beginning with Chapter 2, Kimberly's mother takes the reader back to 1982 when Kimberly was 6 years old and she reflects on her birth and her younger years. As the book continues, the reader learns more and more about young Kimberly and begins to feel her mother's pride as Kimberly advances to adulthood. Kimberly was a smart, athletic, determined, young woman who had a strong faith, a loving family. many friends, a beautiful smile and a cat named Tiger. From emails and letters from her comrades and friends, we learn of her professionalism, her love for her country, and her desire to make a difference. It is quite evident that authors Anna Simon and Ann Hampton did a great amount of research and for that reason, this book is not only inspirational but also very educational. I feel that I had a much better understand of the military and of this war as well as an even greater admiration for our men and women who are fighting in it.Ann tells of her humanitarian visits to Iraq after Kimberly's death and this is a real eye opener for this reader. Ann and her husband Dale, have chosen to maintain their daughter's legacy by establishing the Captain Kimberly Hampton Foundation and have discovered healing in doing so. I was glad to learn about the work done by the American Gold Star Mothers. This is a great one to add to your list of Inspirational Books About Women

Comment from Gayle Wurst, Literary Agent for "Kimberly's Flight"

Thank you for this first-class and very thorough lens on Kimberly's Flight. It is a wonderful tribute to Kimberly and to all our veterans and their families, and I especially appreciate the many reviews and updates on signings. The video on Gold Star Mothers spoke volumes, even between the lines, and brought tears to my eyes. As the agent for Kimberly's Flight, I have always had a deep belief in the fundamental importance and beauty of the values she so clearly embodied, and it has been an honor to help bring her story to light. My attraction to Kimberly was first motivated by her groundbreaking contribution as a woman to the US military. But it was not until after publication, when I actually held the book in my hands and sat back and read it with fresh eyes, did I realize the full importance of Kimberly's achievement and sacrifice, the toll this latter has taken on her family, and how representative their loss is for thousands of other military families whose stories and suffering remain untold. Ann Hampton's story of love and loss, and the chronicle of her exceedingly painful and courageous journey from absence, silence and irreparable loss to a public role as an author and Gold Star Mother working to help the healing of others whose children have been sacrificed to war -- and this in the very country where her own child lost her life -- inspired me anew. It also solved a mystery: "Now," I said to myself, "I know where Kimberly got her moxy -- her patriotism, strength, determination, values, persistence and tremendous courage."Gayle Wurst, Princeton International Agency for the Arts
